Sustainable travel and car parking – updated guidance published
The NHSScotland technical guidance on sustainable travel and car parking is now updated.
What is the guidance being updated?
Sustainable Travel Planning and Car Parking Management (SHTM 07-03) is the NHSScotland technical guidance on sustainable travel and car parking.
Scottish Health Technical Memorandum (SHTM) are documents designed to provide comprehensive advice and guidance across a range of topics – in this case, sustainable travel and car parking.
Additionally, they can be used to develop board-level policy and are often seen as best practice documents.
However, they are not intended to replace or duplicate any international standards, nor any UK Government or Scottish Government legislation which may apply.
This version updates the original transport management and car parking guidance (SHTM 07-03) and amalgamates travel plan guidance (SHTM 07-04), combining the two guidance documents into one. It offers a comprehensive refresh of best practice, guidance and language, and links to national priorities and strategies.
How can I use the guidance?
The guidance can be used at any stage of the travel planning process, but is primarily designed to outline the wider policy, governance, and ownership considerations in the development of a travel plan or strategy at a board level.
We understand different boards are at different stages in developing dedicated travel polices and plans and the guidance has been updated to reflect this, as well as changes in national policies and strategies.
What else is included?
In addition to refreshed guidance, a template travel survey has been developed for board use.
Until now, collating and aggregating travel survey results nationally has not been possible due to different surveys being conducted across boards, with each asking slightly different questions. The template allows boards to use a ready-made survey whilst having the added benefits of being able to compare like-with-like across NHSScotland.
